Waste Reduction Strategies

An educational program designed to empower students to understand the impact of waste and develop practical skills to reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink their everyday choices. Through interactive lessons and real-world connections, students gain tools to make informed, sustainable decisions at school and at home.

  • Waste 1: Introduction to waste, the life cycle of a product (from natural resources to finished goods), recycling guidelines, and the difference between reusable and non-reusable products.

  • Waste 2: Waste reduction solutions—comparing reactive vs. proactive approaches to managing and minimizing waste.

  • Waste 3: Deep dive into the core practices of reduce, reuse, and recycle, with strategies to apply these habits in everyday life.

Optional Components:

  • Waste Audit (Home or School): A hands-on activity guiding students through conducting a waste audit either at home or within their school environment.

  • Landfill Field Trip: An optional visit to the local landfill offers students a real-world perspective on waste systems and environmental impact.

Program Flexibility:
Choose 1 to 3 sessions to fit your classroom schedule and goals. Optional components can be added to extend learning beyond the classroom and into real-world action.

Duration: One class period per session (~ 1 hour each)

All waste reduction programs are grant-funded and offered at no cost to your classroom, thanks to support from the Azulita Project and the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Office.
