Fire Ecology
Are fires good, bad, or can they be a little bit of both? What makes a forest healthy in Northern Arizona?
Duration: one class period (~ 1 hour)
Students study different ways that fire can move through a landscape, the elements of the fire triangle (oxygen, ignition/heat, and fuel), and how Ponderosa Pine forests rely on fire through games, visuals, and hands-on activities. Students will be able to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy fires, and understand the historical importance of fire on Northern Arizona’s landscapes.
