Volunteering

Become a garden volunteer!

Join us in the gardens every Friday and Saturday from 8:00 am to noon. For more information, please contact Susan Lamb, Garden Coordinator, at susan@susanlamb.net.

Activities include creating stone niches and pocket wetlands, weeding and grooming, and planting and watering. You’ll learn about native plant communities and gardening strategies, and have the opportunity to meet visitors from across the Flagstaff community and beyond. We provide tools and supplies; please bring your own gloves, sun protection, and water.

Volunteer Educator

On the first Saturday of every month from 9:30-11:30AM Willow Bend hosts a fun, free, hands-on community event called Science Saturday. We are in need of motivated volunteers who have experience or an interest in working with kids and families to assist with this program.  Volunteer roles include setting up, assisting young participants with various crafts/activities, and cleaning up after each event. Social Media Volunteers

Do you love taking pictures, making short videos, or writing about your experiences? We are seeking volunteers to attend our events and create engaging content, including short videos and blog posts. You can participate in one event or as many as you'd like! Email alex@willowbendcenter.org if interested.

Internships:

We regularly have interns work with us through college courses, Americorps, and other avenues. Interns do not need to have a background in environmental science to apply. We have also worked with students in communications, creative writing, museum studies, studio art, and more.

We will select interns around November for the Spring semester, and around June for the Fall semester each year.
We do not typically have summer interns because it is our slow season.

We do not have any more capacity for interns for Fall 2026.

  • Willow Bend does not offer paid internships, but we have had interns paid externally through grants and partner organizations.

  • Our philosophy is that the internship is primarily a learning experience, and the internship is tailored to each individual’s goals.

    Learning outcomes typically include:

    • Gain experience in environmental education, interpretation, and program development.

    • Gain an increased ability to understand and communicate environmental science topics

    • Learn how to design hands-on, engaging experiences for diverse audiences.

    • Strengthen project management, collaboration, and evaluation skills.

    • Grow understanding of how a small non-profit operates

    To accomplish this, interns will typically help create lessons and activities for community events such as science saturday, shadow field trips and school programs, and participate in the day to day operations of Willow Bend.

    Interns will also work on one or more independent projects based on their interest and what projects we have available at the time.

  • No two days or weeks look the same at Willow Bend! Some weeks our staff is out leading field trips most days of the week, and other weeks we may be setting up for a big community event.

    We have a very flexible schedule that can meet most individuals needs, and we understand the need to balance the internship with other commitments such as work and school.

    Interns on a given week may do a combination of shadowing our programs, meeting with staff to plan lessons and events, and doing work on their own time to complete an independent project. We typically do not have rigid hourly requirements per week.
