Recycling Rules
From paper to plastic, everything we use comes from the Earth. That’s why the best way to help the planet isn’t just recycling—it’s reducing and reusing first!
Duration: one class period (~ 1 hour); Kindergarten programs are 30 minutes.
In this fun, hands-on program, students learn the basic rules of recycling and why reducing and reusing should come first. Through storytelling, sorting activities, and real-life examples, they explore what everyday items are made from—like trees, rocks, oil, and sand—and how those materials come from the Earth. Students practice sorting recyclables, think creatively about how to reuse common items, and learn how recycling helps conserve natural resources. The program supports Flagstaff-specific recycling guidelines and encourages thoughtful, Earth-friendly habits that go beyond the bin.
This program pairs well with our Exploring Earthworms program. Both are grant-funded and offered at no cost to your classroom, thanks to support from the Azulita Project and the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Office.
