Erupting Earth!

How did so many volcanoes end up in Northern Arizona? How do volcanoes form, and what are the different types of rock that lava can create?

Duration: one class period (~ 1 hour)

Students will learn about the San Francisco Volcanic Field and its history of activity. The different types of volcanoes, lava flows, and resulting rocks will be discussed and analyzed. An overview of plate tectonics and the layers of the Earth will also be included. Students will be able to identify different volcanic features and explain how they form, and be familiar with the geologic history of the volcanic field here.
