Classroom Programs: Fourth Grade
To ensure a high-quality educational experience, we work with only one class at a time. Programs run 50 minutes unless otherwise noted.
- Coyote Tales: Learn more about the natural history of this very adaptable animal through Native American coyote tales. Out of Respect for Native American traditions, this program is only available November through March.
- Fire Ecology: Are forest fires always a bad thing? We'll take a look at the role of fire in our ponderosa pine ecosystem and how land managers use fire to maintain and create wildlife habitat. Supported by the Ecological Restoration Institute. Suggested follow-up field trip: “Forest Ecology” at the Arboretum
- Grand Canyon Geology (1 hour): (Special scheduling only; call Sapna at 779-1745) Explore the layers of the Grand Canyon, how the Canyon was formed, and why it is such a unique treasure. Suggested follow-up field trips: “Grand Canyon Rocks” at the Grand Canyon National Park, and “Grand Canyon Geology Program” at the Museum of Northern AZ
- Groundwater in Flagstaff (1 hour): (Special scheduling only; call Sapna at 779-1745) This program uses a groundwater model to help students understand where much of Flagstaff water comes from and how our community uses it. This program is part of the 4th grade FOSS kit.
- Images on Stone (1 hour): Through a slide show, students will learn the importance of native rock art and even make their own petroglyph! Suggested follow-up field trip: “Rock Art Workshop” at the Museum of Northern AZ
- Mystery Animal: Students will learn how the California Condor has come back from the brink of extinction and is now wild in Coconino County.
- People of the Grand Canyon (1 hour): Using a time line and game, students get a picture of people's activities in the Grand Canyon throughout history. Suggested follow-up field trips: “Rails and Tales” at the Grand Canyon National Park, and “ Comparitive Cultures” at the Museum of Northern AZ
- Trash and the Three Rs: Students learn how to reduce waste, reuse materials, and recycle in Flagstaff. Suggested follow-up field trip: “Recycling Tour” through Willow Bend
- Water Quality in the Classroom (1 hour): Students will learn the basics of water quality testing, focusing primarily on pH and DO chemical testing. Suggested follow-up field trip: “Water Quality Field Trip” through Willow Bend
