2010 Summer Bug Camps for Kids
The Colorado Plateau Museum of Arthropod Biodiversity offers
summer bug camps each year. During each 1-week camp, kids learn about
insect natural history and biodiversity through a series of fun
projects and collecting trips. All supplies are provided and kids get to create and keep
their very own insect collection.
- Day 1: Build your own bug. Kids learn about insect morphology and curation by constructing their own bug using real insect parts.
- Day 2: Caddis fly jewelry and pond communities. Kids learn about habitat adaptation and aquatic ecosystems.
- Day 3: Insect maze. Kids learn about insect behavior and predator / prey interactions.
- Day 4: Insect scavenger hunt and pest management. Kids learn about insect diversity and pest control.
- Day 5: Insect cuisine. Kids learn about the importance of insects as a food source for vertebrates including humans. Parents are invited to an insect banquet and open house.
Grand Canyon Youth's Middle School Program
This summer, Grand Canyon Youth and Willow Bend will immerse you in the world of renewable energy and sustainability. During the first week, we will learn about and visit sites of solar, wind, and hydroelectric power as well as help these organizations through service-learning projects.
In addition, we will go on a 7-day rafting trip on the San Juan River. Floating from Bluff to Clay Hills, Utah, we will experience the power of sun, wind, and water, as we explore the natural wonders of the San Juan.
Dates: TBA
