About our photovoltaic and rainwater systems
Photovoltaic Project
, a local sustainable energy company, generously donated seven photovoltaic panels along with the expertise to install a grid-tied photovoltaic system in the spring of 2008 at Willow Bend. This system supports 100 percent of Willow Bend’s energy needs. Prometheus Systems continually offer quarterly hands-on, do-it-yourself photovoltaics workshops about how to install your own system.
Rainwater Harvesting System
Willow Bend received a $3000 grant from to install a rainwater harvesting system for our Three Sisters native edibles garden. This is a service-learning project with Flagstaff High Schools’ club.
The system is purposely simple and low-tech. Our catchment system consists of two 55-gallon barrels, one 300-gallon barrel, and one 1,500-gallon barrel - all providing gravity-fed, drip irrigation to directly irrigate the roots of plants in our native gardens. Drip irrigation works at low pressure, which saves on water waste and evaporation - up to 80 percent over spray irrigation!
